Lesson 8

When environmental imbalance and internal disturbance in the earth appears in its dreadful form then we call it a natural calamity. Floods, drought, earthquakes, volcanoes, storms etc. are known as natural calamities. When a natural calamity strikes, there is great loss of life and property. Transport and communication services come to a standstill, houses are destroyed and along with people, birds and animals and other tiny creatures also die. When there is excessive rainfall then there are floods. Wherever the water in the rivers starts flowing above the danger mark there the crops are destroyed. Many villages, towns and settlements are immersed in water. Electricity, water and communication services are disrupted. Rail tracks are uprooted and trains are cancelled. Wherever there is wrath of floods there the day to day life of the common man is disrupted. Oceanic storms are also a big natural crisis. Coastal areas are mostly affected by this. When high sea waves come then the coastal areas are submerged in water. Transport and communication services are ruined. Before a oceanic storm sailors and fishermen are warned to refrain from going into the sea through radio, television, public announcements and other mass media. Earthquakes occur due to internal disturbance within the earth. The place where the epicenter of the earthquake is, there the ill effects of the earthquake can be seen the most. When there is an earthquake then you should come out of your houses and homes and go to some open space because buildings, temporary huts, houses etc. fall and people are wounded in large numbers. Wherever earthquakes occur a lot, there wooden or earthquake resistant houses should be made so that there is not much loss to life and property. When hot lava from within the earth bursts and flows out of a volcano then many villages are immersed by the hot lava. In volcano affected areas people all the time live in fear and terror. It is a matter of satisfaction that from the point of view of volcanoes our country is quite safe. By being cautious man can save himself from these natural calamities to quite an extent. By preventing the cutting of forests one can reduce the adversity of floods. For protection against earthquakes, wooden or earthquake resistant houses should be made. For protection against tsunamis etc. extensive tree plantation should be done on the coasts. Wherever natural calamities strike, there the government, various non-government organizations and organizations should also be always vigilant for disaster management. Where on one hand nature is a friend of man, on the other hand in its fearsome form it is also his enemy. We should be cautious regarding these natural disasters. As far as possible we should always be prepared and vigilant because these calamities do not go without leaving behind many diseases. In spite of man being victorious every time nature gives him a new challenge. Man's identity is hidden in confronting every challenge and without confronting them it is not possible to save yourself from disasters.

Lesson 9

Dear Sudha ,

Namaste.

This morning when I picked up the newspaper as soon as I got up I was very happy to see your article in it. But after reading the article I felt that I do not agree with you on certain issues. I feel that today it is not right to be scared of globalization or to keep away from it. Even you would agree that today no country can stay constrained to itself. Just think that when India became independent how backward we were from the economic viewpoint. Due to lack of advanced techniques our industries were backward. After independence our industries were given government protection and restriction was imposed on foreign imports. In spite of this there was no particular improvement in our economic state. You agree don't you that in the last few years the amount of economic progress that has taken place because of the effect of globalization was not as much even in half a century after independence. India is no longer in the state that it was in earlier. Now the country is making progress in all directions. Amongst the many benefits of globalization, the main are - exchange of science and technology. The more the exchange of science and technology the more developing countries like India will benefit. In developing countries where raw material is abundant, there new industries can be established. The number of new industries that are established, that many new employment opportunities will increase. Unemployment in the country will decrease. As production increases, exports will increase. The less control there is on import-export the more the industries in the country will benefit because we can buy raw material from wherever it is cheap and sell the finished products wherever the sale is good. For the economic progress of the country and to earn maximum profit for buying raw material and selling finished products we will have to cross the boundary of our country. Globalization will prove to be helpful in this, not a hindrance. Only economists can give more views on the economic benefits and disadvantages of globalization but this much I know that as our production and exports are increasing because of industrial progress, the standard of living of us Indians is also increasing. The numbers of facilities that are available to us today were never as much before. It is my belief that in the process of globalization India is emerging as a new economic power. The way people thought about the consequences of globalization no longer exists. Keep me apprised of your views.

With Regards.

Yours,

Uma

Mrs. Sudha,

Deputy Director

Ministry of Environment and Forest, New Delhi.

Lesson 10

Approximately 1730 meters above sea level in the pretty Kashmir valley the beautiful city settled on the banks of the Jhelum River is known as Srinagar. The huge Dal Lake is the main attraction of Srinagar. In the lake there are house boats each more beautiful than the other. In these all home like facilities are available to tourists. Long boats which are small in size are known as 'Shikaras'.Traders bring goods in them and sell them and tourists enjoy boating. Shikaras laden with colourful flowers, vegetables and a variety of goods float on the Dal Lake. The Shikaras floating in the lake look very beautiful. On the eastern banks of the Dal lake in the foot hills of the Himalayas the Chashmeshahi, Nishaat and Shalimar gardens of the time of the Mughal emperors add to the beauty of the Kashmir valley. The children playing in the gardens, young men and women roaming about and bees hovering above flowers charm the hearts of tourists. Four Chinar trees standing in the middle of the Dal lake look very attractive. On the western banks of the Dal lake where on one hand there is the Hazratbal mosque, on the other hand on the peak of the Hari mountain is the famous temple of Shri Shankaracharya. Srinagar is renowned not only for tourism but also for its handicrafts. It is also famous for engraving on wood and utensils, Kashmiri embroidery on cloth and weaving of carpets. The Pashmina and Tosha shawls of Kashmir are world famous. Paper Mache is also a special handicraft of Kashmir. It becomes very cold here; sometimes the temperature reaches below zero. At that time the Dal Lake also becomes a ground of ice and tourists and children enjoy playing many types of games on this frozen lake. In winters the people here wear long woolen cloaks, which are called 'Firan' in the Kashmiri language. Under this people keep a 'Kangdi' (fire pot) so that they keep getting warmth. The people here are hard-working and friendly. Fascinated by the unparallel beauty of the Kashmir valley Firdoss had said, If there is heaven anywhere on earth, it is here, it is here, it is here, after which Jahangir repeated the same words with reference to the Red Fort in Delhi.

Lesson 11

One day I walked eight kilometers from the village, caught a train and reached Delhi. As soon as I came out of the station auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers surrounded me. Thinking that I was new to the place all of them asked in one voice, where will you go, Sir? To escape from them I quickly took an auto rickshaw and reached my Uncle's house. As soon as I reached the house I met my Uncle sitting in the Verandah. Alone, sad and seeming to wait for someone. When I wished him he blessed me and making me sit down next to him asked about what was going on in the village. Even after seeing me sitting with Uncle the people in the house continued with their work and the children were sitting with their eyes glued to the TV. In the evening my cousin brother Sandeep returned from office. For some time all of us kept talking. At night everyone had dinner together. In the morning I went with my brother for a walk in the park. In cities only parks are left for breathing in fresh air. While returning my brother told me that in cities maintaining livelihood for people in service is very difficult. The rates of electricity, water, house-rent, telephone, newspaper, food products, etc. increase every day. Here everybody is self-centered and one neighbor doesn't even know the other. When we returned from the walk my sister-in-law (Bhabhi) gave everyone tea and looking towards me said, Brother, in the village you must be drinking milk in the morning, but here we have get into the habit of drinking tea. Should I get milk for you or will you have tea with us? I also said yes for tea. After this everyone got ready quickly and left for their work. That day I spent time with my Uncle at home only. Next day I went to visit the city with my brother. While walking on the way I saw tall buildings, big cinema halls, crowded markets, big malls, buses, cars and motorcycles racing down wide black roads. In these malls I saw big showrooms of all kinds of goods. While going up the escalator I was feeling scared too but this experience was thrilling. In these malls I saw people drinking tea-coffee, conversing and making noise. Young men and women eating pizzas, burgers, sandwiches or chow Mein seemed very different. I saw that while buying goods some people were making the payment by credit card instead of cash. For me this was a new experience. I tasted pizza and coffee with my brother. While returning we travelled by the metro also. This was my first experience of travelling by metro. The metro quite crowded. Seeing the hustle and bustle filled life in Delhi city I started feeling that this is why city people live in tension and are also victims of many diseases. Household problems, office work, crowds in buses, polluted air, all these things are making city life difficult. Despite so many difficulties people are still attracted to the cities because employment opportunities are more in the cities. But I did not like it here. After just two days I returned to the openness of my village and the lap of nature. I did not find city life favorable. My heart remains happy in the village only.
Lesson 12

A rich man lived in a village. A son was born in his house. He kept his name 'Amar'. He wished that when his son grew up he would do go good deeds and make his name immortal. When he grew up Amar gained knowledge of his father's wish. He thought that why not do something so that everyone would hear of his name. Everyday hundreds of people passed near Amar's field. He collected sand and wrote his name on it. People passing by read his name. Amar was happy that hundreds of people came to know his name. One day strong winds blew in the evening and blew the sand away. As soon as the sand blew away Amar's name was erased. One day he wrote his name on the bark of a tree trunk. He thought that from here his name would not get erased easily. One day unfortunately such a windstorm comes that the tree trunk broke. Poor Amar's dream of making his name immortal was shattered. Next time avoiding being observed he wrote his name on the wall of an ancient building. Many tourists from all over the country and abroad used to come to see that ancient building. Amar thought that now his name would reach all over the country and abroad. One day unfortunately there was a heavy downpour along with a hail-storm too. The building was old. Its' wall collapsed. As soon as the wall collapsed poor Amar's name became dust. Amar felt very sad. He thought of writing his name at such a spot where it would not get erased. There was a river near the village. The river flowed below a rock. There was a cave there. In the cave there were ancient statues and mural paintings. Thousands of tourists from all over the country and abroad used to come there. Amar went there one morning. With a chisel he wrote his name on the rock. While writing his name he thought that now his name will become immortal throughout the country and abroad. Here his name could be indelible, but one day black clouds gathered in the sky and there was such heavy rain till far off that there was a terrible flood in the area. With the flood the river water flowed so fast even rocks got swept away with the water. Along with the rock poor Amar's name got swept away with the water. His dream of making his name immortal shattered into pieces. At the same time a saint had come to Amar's village. The villagers were taking refuge with the saint to solve their problems. This was a good opportunity for Amar too. He believed that the saint would surely suggest some idea to make his name immortal. Amar also sought shelter with him and asked him of a way to make his name immortal. Along with this he also gave information regarding the efforts he had made. Hearing what Amar said the saint smiled slowly. In a sweet voice the saint lovingly said - Child, if you want to make your name immortal then don't write it on mud or stone but on the hearts of people. Go and do some kind of work for which people will remember you. Hearing this he started thinking about how to make his name immortal. Suddenly he was overwhelmed with joy. He said to himself - Yes, this method is right. He realized that your name can become immortal only by serving people and doing good deeds. Then he undertook the task of serving people. For this he turned his house into a hermitage and spent his whole life in the service of mankind. His house became famous by the name of 'Amar Ashram' and in this way Amar's dream of making his name immortal got fulfilled.
